Alcala is a real project (managed by IBCmass http://www.ibcmass.es), built for the town council of Alcala de Henares near Madrid. The application is designed to help immigrants learn Spanish through selected lessons, using visual cues, audio, a built-in dictionary and exercises.

The project has multiple objectives. One is to aid immigrants to integrate themselves easily into the community. Others include showing them:

  • the city where they are going to live,
  • local customs,
  • vocabulary for daily tasks,
  • common expressions

Target Audience

People travel more than ever these days, with many choosing to move to different countries. Immigrants need help when they arrive in new countries so that they can integrate themselves in the community. It is very helpful to offer them tools to improve their skills faster. It is also nice to be able to port these tools to the mobile because the properties of the mobile platform are perfect for on-the-spot language tools, because people always carry their devices with them.

Tools Used

To achieve these objectives, we have developed three basic applications:

  • An online web based application
  • the same application for the desktop and
  • a mobile version of the application.

All of these applications were developed in Flash, each utilising multimedia contents, such as audio, and learning activities and games.
